So I bought Nikon D7000 as my first DSLR camera and yes it is not a step but rather a jump forward. But I think that is how the things work.
The set of lenses I have is Nikkor 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR, AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D and Tokina 11~16mm F2.8 AT-X116 PRO DX. Last but not least I will be buying a Macro lens.
